Yulia & Kirill — Funicular restaurant

Yulia & KirillJune 2026

Yulia and Kirill wanted an intimate day and not a single wedding cliché: no flower arch, no tiered cake, no evening scheduled to the minute. The venue was chosen for exactly that — the Funicular terrace above Tbilisi, where the city itself does the decorating.

So the day began not with getting ready but with a pillow fight. A room with sand-coloured walls and heavy grey curtains, a panel of red birds on a pale ground, Yulia and Kirill in striped pyjamas and barefoot on the sofa. On a morning like that nobody hurried anybody.

The code of the day was on the dress. Dense ivory, sleeveless, a skirt that holds its own shape, embroidered morning glories and lilies winding across the fabric — orange with dark veins, on green stems. Yulia stood by that same panel, and it became clear that the flowers on the wall and the flowers on the dress speak one language. The rest of the day was built around them: coral tulips, white callas, blue delphinium and an orange gerbera in the bouquet, an orange flower in the buttonhole of Kirill’s checked jacket.

Before the evening they walked the old town: a square, ochre façades, moulded mascarons, a wooden shushabandi on the second floor and a spiral staircase down into the yard. The couple at a wrought-iron gate, paper flags overhead — a backdrop that needed neither building nor decorating.

The arch was replaced by a wall of cream fabric gathered in big knots. The ceremony was set for the hour when the low sun hits that wall from behind: the fabric lit up right through, and no other light was needed. There were no arrangements on plinths — tropical armfuls lay straight on the floor at the guests’ feet: monstera, orange gerberas, blue nigella, hydrangeas, strelitzias on long stems.

At sunset they came out to the balustrade: the whole city below in warm haze, the light even and low, a place to stand for a while. At night the city turned into scattered lights and the cake came out onto a round table under a column — bright green, rectangular, with the texture of a cut tree and a dense layer of blueberries. No tiers, no figurines: what had been agreed at the start held to the last frame.
